The Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park, home to towering crimson sand dunes, leather skinned and scattered vegetation, and some of the only wildlife resilient enough to thrive under these kinds of conditions, is also home to another impressive site: the Twee Rivieren rest camp. This desert outpost has the full backing of the area’s atmospheric charm and rustic scenery, locked onto the dry riverbed of the Nossob. This particular area is the administrative headquarters for the entire Kgalagadi Transfrontier park, and is home to impressive seasonal migrations of various desert wildlife.

Accommodation at the rest camp is provided at camp sites, finished with braai (barbecue) facilities, communal ablutions and laundry, and electricity points. Family cottages are available, with air-conditioning, two single beds, two-plate stoves, fridge-freezer combination, and a double sleeper couch, with all units suitable for the disabled. Family chalets are also available for accommodation, with air conditioning, two-plate stoves, and fridge-freezer combinations.

Ecology and wildlife preservation lectures are presented at the camp, and cover issues pertaining to the area and its indigenous inhabitants, and screened slide shows and holiday programs are all coordinated from the information center. Coordinated and led by a team of informative and eager field guides, there are multiple night drives and day walks through the area, with 4 x 4 trails and loops in and around the camp.

Facilities at Twee Rivieren include a swimming pool, shop, restaurant and filling stations.

Kgalagadi park is home to an extensive range of dry-land-condition wildlife, including gemsbok, cheetah, giraffe, eland, Spotted Hyena, springbok, lion, Red Hartebeest, and Short-Tailed Gerbil. Arguably more notable to the area is the park’s huge 280 strong indigenous bird population, including Tawny and Black-breasted (chested) Snake Eagle, Gabar Goshawk, Pale Chanting Goshawk, bateleur, Greater Kestrel, White-backed and Lappet-faced Vulture, and Pygmy Falcon.
