Herds of gemsbok, springbok, eland and blue wildebeest follow the seasons across red dunes fading into infinity, sparse vegetation and dry riverbeds form the perfect backdrop to show off the spectacular antelope and predator species, striking camel thorn trees bring respite from the gruelling heat; this is Mata Mata - Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
The remarkable 3,6 million hectare Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is an amalgamation of the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa and Gemsbok National Park in Botswana and lies 250 km from Upington in the far Northern Cape. The unpredictable and severe natural environment has placed adaptive demands on both fauna and flora species and therefore has attracted many research and conservation projects. Whilst exploring the Botswana and South African sides of the park, stay in lovely cottages at the splendid variety of rest camps, chalets overlooking the vast landscapes, or invite nature into your living space at a wilderness camp.
Mata Mata - Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park holds significant archaeological importance as there are traces of Stone Age human activity found within the park. Sadly the original inhabitants, the San, have been displaced but hopefully will be re-instated to their rightful place. After an exciting day of adventure, have sundowners and a traditional African barbeque, exchange stories around the fire-pit and take delight in the most spectacular sunsets. The harsh semi-arid environment of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park possesses a special appeal as if stroked by an artist’s colour palette; magnificent and inspiring, Mata Mata - Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park will capture your heart and uplift your spirit.
